Day 3 - Ephesus, Turkey
We arrived in Ephesus mid-morning on Monday #1. Well actually we arrived in the port of Kusadasi since Ephesus - once a port city itself - is now several miles inland due to the silting of its original access. We were bussed to this 2300 year old town which has been built and rebuilt like so many other venues over the centuries. The litany of inhabitants include the Hittites, Greeks, Romans, and Ottomans. One of the fascinating aspects was that with aqueducts the homes had running water and indoor toilets dating to 200 BC.

Yet another "rug visit"
|
Let me elaborate on the "rug visit". It seems that Turkish rugs come from Turkey. Who knew? Though Janet and Ellen had been charmed by our Kurdish friend in Istanbul, buying a rug wasn't on the agenda. By the time we got to Ephesus though, a conversation had begun that goes "You know we really do need something underneath the dining room table". The finality of such a purchase this distance from home - and not knowing the precise specifications of what we do need - prevailed and we did not lighten our wallet.
We had our second on-ship dinner at the other one of the two specialty restaurants - The Chef's Table - and it was excellent. That said, it was a Chinese menu which somehow seemed a bit out of keeping with Viking's usual "localization program". Additionally, we learned that "our special reservations" would find us with this same menu for the entirety of the first leg of the trip - so we're not so likely to rush back.
Here are more pictures from Ephesus.
